The Quiet Concept Art

The Quiet is the primary antagonistic force threatening Vale: a manifestation of perfect, absolute stillness that spreads across the land like a tide of crystalline death. It consumes entropy itself, leaving everything it touches in a state of immaculate, eternal stasis.

Lore & Background

The Academic Understanding

Countless theories have arisen to explain the Quiet. Religions, cults, and schools of philosophy have been built around its existence. Yet among scholars, a single explanation has become the accepted truth.

Aeons ago, a mage of unimaginable ambition sought to seize the throne of the god of Chaos. He failed. But in the attempt, he inflicted a mortal wound upon the deity and shattered the balance that governs reality.

With Chaos weakened and unable to maintain cosmic equilibrium, Harmony began to run rampant across the realm. What should have been a force of balance became a tide of absolute order, manifesting, so the scholars say, as The Quiet.

The event is real. The overabundance of harmonic forces is real and it is problematic, but the conclusion is only half correct. The wounding of Chaos did not create The Quiet. It may have opened the door, but its true consequence runs in the opposite direction of everything the scholars believe.

The Deeper Truth

Unknown to every inhabitant of Vale, The Quiet was never born of Harmony, nor of the wound to Chaos, nor of anything within this reality at all.

The Quiet is caused by an interdimensional organism. A hyperdimensional mold. A mindless fungus that feeds on entire realities.

There is no intelligence behind it, no design, no purpose beyond consumption.

Where it originates is unknown, and the beginning of its life cycle is not yet settled in the game's lore. What is settled is how it ultimately reached Vale:

Somewhere in the multiverse, the fungus consumed a Meridian traveler. In doing so, it gained access to something far more valuable than a single life: a path.

Following traces embedded within the traveler's mind, the fungus discovered a route to the Meridian homeworld, whose greatest pride was an impossibly ancient library containing perfect knowledge of innumerable worlds and dimensions.

The fungus took root in a dark corner and began feeding on the Meridian's reality. With each record it consumes, it encodes the perfect and complete information of an entire dimension, trivializing the process of tunneling into and consuming it.

A mapped world cannot hide. A mapped world dies before it even realizes it is under attack. This process, a hyperdimensional fungus devouring entropy itself, is The Quiet.

Hope

Fortunately for the inhabitants of Vale, no Meridian ever completed a map of Vale. Though at least one is currently working on one.

Since no hypercube of this world exists within the archive. The fungus might have never found this world, were it not carried here by accident, on the robes of a young Meridian at the start of his ritual journey.

That bought Vale time. Time alone would only delay the ending. What gives Vale a chance to win was planted long before The Quiet ever arrived.

The scholars got one part right. A mage did mortally wound the god of Chaos in his bid for the throne, and the imbalance between Harmony and Chaos is real. What they never learned is that the dying god's final act was to seed the world with sparks of himself. These became the first Adepts: warriors forged to hold back the rising tide of Harmony his own wound had loosed.

He could not have known that the same gift would one day answer a far stranger enemy.
